Maungtaw, May 22—Tatmadaw navy’s vessel No.568 has found a boat carrying more than 200 Bengalis about 4 nautical miles of Thinbawgwe Village in Maungtaw Township about 3:30 pm on 21 May. The Bengalis were taken to Angumaw Village and handed over to the authorities concerned at 2:30 am on 22 May.
Upon investigation, the boat is 80 ft long and 20.5 ft width with 6 ft draught. It is equipped with 150 Hp EK-100 engine and owned by Au Mint of Ranong of Thailand. The boat left Ranong on 8 April and arrived in Bangladeshi territorial waters on 13 April. It anchored about 4 miles west of Ohn Island where Bangladeshis arrived in groups by small boats. After leaving Ohn Island, the boat arrived in Myanmar territorial waters when It ended up in arrest as it made a U-turn on 15 May to avoid inspections launched by Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian authorities. There are 208 people onboard the vessel, of them 10 is the age of about 14 years and the remaining are aged between 30 and 40. They are from Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and north of Dhaka. They are altogether 219 people including nine crew members and two Bengalis interpreters.
The remaining boat carrying one Bengali and eight crew members is 68 ft long and 16.9 ft wide with 5 ft draught. It is equipped with TWK-6 engine owned by Ko Khaing from Myeik. The boat delivered supplies to the one owned by Au Mint of Ranong of Thailand and left Kawthoung on 4 May and arrived in Bangladeshi territorial waters on 12 May. The Bengalis were handed over to the officials concerned at Angumaw Village and taken to Alel Thankyaw Village by cars. They were kept at Arabic school temporary camp arranged by Rakhine State Government and provided with necessary humanitarian assistance.
