With my schoolbag on my back, I stepped into a wide street and began to ask people about Diana's arrival at the cancer hospital. The people laughed at me and looked away. I thought they were laughing at my cheap rubber sandals, and this made me angry
was very young when I began to read the newspaper, a student of class 8 in a dusty Punjabi town. But at that time I thought it was very important, one of several indulgent practices that allowed me to dream.
Every day after school I used to go to Malik Tufail’s dera to read his copy of the Khabrain newspaper. Malik Tufail was a wily man who dealt in three types of business according to the season. In the summer he purchased wheat and in winter he collected rice; and all year round he sold furnace oil to the brick kilns in our district. Every day, at his dera, I extracted pictures from his newspaper of women I found beautiful. And I looked forward in particular to pictures of the tennis player Martina Hingis, who had a radiant brow, bright teeth and attractive white thighs.
One day, when I was sitting on Malik’s charpai and drinking tea, I saw in the newspaper the picture of a slim and stunning lady with sad eyes. Her name was given as Diana. The news item said that she had come to Lahore to help the patients at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital. In the picture she was wearing a lovely-vulgar dress that I interpreted as a kameez without a shalwar. At once she became in my mind a charming, learned, wondrous social worker with firm, glistening legs. Now I had heard that cancer was a fatal disease, incurable all over the world, and I had also come to assume that it was contagious. And my heart leapt when I saw Diana posing for another picture with a cancer baby in her lap. What if the cancer germs flew from the baby into the lap of Diana and infected her person? I decided right away to help her, to save her from her own unsuspecting generosity.
The next morning I boarded a bus to Lahore. I was wearing my school uniform and rubber sandals. But I was fearful in my heart. I hadn’t told my parents about my plan to save Diana; I hadn’t even been to Lahore, and had in my pocket only 10 rupees, which I now passed to the persistent bus conductor. Diana’s beauty was encouraging me to abide by my intentions and complete the journey, but I kept thinking about my poor parents, of how they would weep, ignorant and devastated, if I got lost in the storm of people in Lahore and never returned.
My town was only 60 km from Lahore, and the bus soon came to the Thokar Niaz Baig stop. With my schoolbag on my back, I stepped into a wide street and began to ask people about Diana’s arrival at the cancer hospital. The people laughed at me and looked away. I thought they were laughing at my cheap rubber sandals, and this made me angry. For a long time I walked without asking any questions. At last I came to what was undoubtedly the Shaukat Khanum hospital: it was the imposing red brick building I had seen in the pictures. But in other ways it was utterly unlike the pictures.
There were policemen everywhere. They had batons in their hands and were waving them about to shoo away crowds of poor people. The hospital itself, smug and distant, was far inside; I was on the edge of its outside, a in a dust storm. When I tried to go past the policemen they struck me with their batons and pushed me into the crowd. I lost my schoolbag, my feet were trampled, and I quickly found myself wailing and shouting for relief. The thought of my parents came back to me, only this time it came as a well-formed fear: how would I explain my lost schoolbag when I went home?
In my heart I had already accepted defeat, and was looking for lies to tell in my defense, lies that would bring me out of a bad situation and then help me erase it altogether from my folly-full past.
It remains to this day a vivid memory, something I think I will never forget.
