When the tragic events of September 11th occurred, he decided it was time to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather – who fought in World War II – his uncles, and his cousins and join the Marines. Evans served three tours in Iraq and deployed to Afghanistan for his fourth deployment, in March 2010. On May 16, he was the squad leader, on foot patrol, when he stepped on an IED, losing both legs above the knee and his left hand.
