Nice morning but rain threatening.
On duty 1 pm until 5.30 pm.
Spent evening at Pont-Noyelle, where I had supper, I have one meal at least daily there and it is a very welcome change from army rations, although I must admit that the latter Read more ... have improved considerably since the Bombadier was sent away after the affair with myself, which resulted in 7 days of field punishment for me.
One hears frequently even now bitter complaints of our former arrangements, which were undoubtedly a positive disgrace.

Other war news from today in 1916:
Western Front
British and French advance on Albert-Bapaume road.
British advance 1,000 yards and capture Le Sars.
French advance north-east of Morval to within 200 yards of Sailly.
Eastern Front
Enemy retake Kronstadt and Szekely.
Romanian forces withdrawing to frontier on whole line Predeal to Orsova.
Southern Front
British advance towards Seres continues (Struma front).
Italians capture one of the peaks of the Busa Alta (Avisio, Trentino).
Heavy artillery fights on both banks of the Somme. No infantry action, except a slight lead east of Bouchavesnes.
On the British/Allied front, the enemy artillery was very active in the south of Anchor. Many were dispersed by the fire of our allies.
The Bulgarians retreated before the English forces on the Struma.
In the region of the Cerna, sharp fighting on the whole of the Mesduzidli-Kenali Gradesnica-front. The Serbs took 60 prisoners.
The Italians captured 102 prisoners on Nagorno-Avisio.
Romanians have advanced, along with the Russians, in Dobrogea, where 300 prisoners were taken.

Horses in World War I:
The use of horses in World War I marked a transitional period in the evolution of armed conflict.
Cavalry units were initially considered essential offensive elements of a military force, but over the course of the war, the vulnerability of horses to modern machine gun and artillery fire reduced their utility on the battlefield.
This paralleled the development of tanks, which would ultimately replace cavalry in shock tactics.
While the perceived value of the horse in war changed dramatically, horses still played a significant role throughout the war.
The military mainly used horses for logistical support during the war; they were better than mechanized vehicles at traveling through deep mud and over rough terrain. Horses were used for reconnaissance and for carrying messengers, as well as pulling artillery, ambulances, and supply wagons.

Finished duty this morning at 6 8.30 am after working all night. Weather brighter but close.
Have not received any news from my wife for some considerable time.
I expected a parcel quite a fortnight past and am rather upset that it has not Read more ... arrived.
On duty at 5.30 pm was permitted to leave the office at 8 pm instead of 9 pm on account of scarcity of work in comparison to the staff employed.

Eastern Front
Falkenhayn's offensive extending east against Kronstadt, Romanian retreat continues.
Russian activities removed from Volhynia to northern Galicia; fighting renewed at Brzezany (Zlota Lipa region).
Southern Front
Lively actions with seven miles of Monastir.
Gradual withdrawal Bulgarians from valley of Struma to mountains beyond Demirhissar and Seres.
Strong enemy counter-attack on Busa Alta positions repulsed by Italians.
Our soldiers captured 9, 88 mm cannons in the region Morval.
We continued our progress to the east of this town and repelled a strong German attack against the newly conquered trenches north of Frégicourt.
In Macedonia, Allied forces successfully continue their forward movement. They have reached and crossed the Cerna to Obroveni-Brod.
Progressing, despite the ice on both sides of the Baba Mountains, and they took Buf Popli.
Romanians have recrossed the Danube.

Message dogs:
Were considered by some as the real heros of the war, they were credited with indirectly saving thousands of lives, by delivering vital dispatches when phone lines broke down, in between units at the front and the headquarters behind.
Barbed wire, slit trenches, shell holes and chemical gases were among the many obstacles faced by these brave dogs.
