Busy night.
Very white frost this morning, not quite so bitterly cold today and a beautiful sun is shining.
After breakfast and a wash up, spent morning writing and studying.
Read more ... Dinner at my billet, being the guest of my land-people.
Spent afternoon in conversation.
Very fatigued, as am much in need of sleep and rest.
On duty 5 pm until 9 pm.

Other War news from today in 1917:
Western Front
North of the Ancre British take about 600 yards of enemy trenches near the Beaucourt-Puisieux road.
South of Serre Hill enemy attack British new positions, but are decimated.
Eastern Front
South of Halicz small hostile forces force the Dniester on the ice, but is driven back by a counter-attack.
Southern Front
East of Gorizia the Italian recover the trenches taken by the Austrians, and make 100 prisoners.
Asiatic and Egyptian Theatres
At Kut, British resume attack on river bank of Tigris, hemming the Turks in on the Dahra bend, taking all but the last line of trenches.
Naval and Overseas Operations
The U.S. S.S. "Lyman M. Law" sunk by a submarine off Sardinia.

German Government state that the restraint placed on Mr. Gerard was an error of minor officials.

Lyman M. Law, built by Gessner & Marr, West Haven in 1890 and owned at the time of her loss by Benedict Manson, New Haven, was an American 4-masted schooner of 1300 tons.
On February 11th, 1917, Lyman M. Law, on a voyage from Stockton, US to Palermo with a cargo of 60,000 bundles of lemon-box staves, was sunk by the German submarine U-35 (Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière), 25 miles from Cagliari.
The crew was uninjured and transported to the coastal town of Cagliari, where they were released.
