The church is an old one and not by any means remarkable for its structural architecture, at least that was my impression.
It had however been elaborately decorated and the walls and pillars painted in divers hues. The painting, which were hung about the building constituted in my opinion the most remarkable feature to be seen in this place of worship.
Perhaps however my vision in such matters may be influenced in a prejudicial direction on account of the fact that having had the privilege of visiting that most wonderful sumptuous church St-Johns at Valetta, Malta, one is apt to judge to readily and in so doing overlook the claims of those of less repute.
After breakfast a few of the “O.T’s” including myself who were not down for scheme or practice, went for a route march, taking the usual route and stopping at a cafe at Epagnette until about 12 noon.
Upon reaching camp I heard that a big draft was being got ready, but at the time of going to dinner, no list of names had then come out.
At 1.20pm however while having my dinner I heard my name mentioned as one selected for the draft, which had to parade at 1.30pm for medical inspection.
Proceeded to the general hospital at 2 pm, we were kept waiting until 3 pm before the doctor was at liberty to examine us. Arrived back at camp at 4pm, where we were informed to parade again at 5pm.
This meant rushing about a bit as had to fetch my washing from down the road, fight for some tea, draw equipment, including rifle, a couple of gas helmets, rifle sling, anti-gas goggles, 50 rounds of ammunition and can of rifle oil, also had then to collect my things together and pack up etc.
Marched down to the station at 5.30 pm after shaking hands all round with my former friends.
Entrained at 8.30 pm started shortly after 9 pm. We passed through beautiful country every yard of it a perfect picture.

The First World War Diaries of Stapleton Tench Eac 15/6/16
Weather still very cold and wet.
French time advanced one hour last night. This makes the 2nd time have had to put on my watch 60 minutes.

After tea went down to the town and bought another dozen picture postcards.
Afterwards returned and called at the cafe up the road, where I stayed until 9.15 pm, arriving at camp soon afterwards, found a letter from Dill awaiting me.
It looks as though I shall be here for some little time yet, as the drafts are only small, which have gone up the line since I came and there are a large number of men in the camp.

The First World War Diaries of Stapleton Tench Eac 13/6/16
Very cold night, beastly weather conditions prevailed this morning.
After parade bought a couple of eggs 4.5 f for breakfast, but waiting in the queue for tea and a slice of ham, caused them to go cold, also the tea.
Went for a route march Read more ... in morning, taking the same way as we did a few days ago.
It was however very wet under foot and a cold wind blowing, stayed for a time at a cafe at Epagnette and drank coffee and rum.
In the afternoon, operators marched off for practice in the “top” school. I did not do much of that however, but wrote a few letters and studied French instead.
After tea walked out to Epagnette and stopped at a cafe for a time, came back to Abbeville and went into my favourite cafe to talk French.
Returned to camp at 9 pm, found a letter waiting for me, which had just arrived from my dear wife Elinor.
This was the first I had received and was very welcome indeed.

The Nyasaland Rhodesian Field Forces, under the command of Brigadier General Edward Northey, began their offensive in East Africa on 20 May 1916.
Northey’s forces crossed into German East Africa on 25 May 1916.
On May 30 they had occupied Neu Langenburg. On June 6 they captured Neu Utengulc.
Alt Langenburg was occupied on June 13. Ubena was captured on June 30.
The colony's military commander, General Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck, spent the war harrying 40,000 Allied forces with his band of 3,500 Europeans and 12,000 native Askaris.
He surrendered only after receiving news of the armistice on 25 November 1918.
