Lynne Bernard After seeing a news story this morning in which 10 police officers beat up a suspect who fled but had given up, I once again wondered about the role of testosterone on aggression in men. In an article in Scientific American, I found this: "One psycho Read more ... logist, James Dabbs of Georgia State University in Atlanta, made a career out of conducting studies connecting testosterone to every kind of lifestyle imaginable. In his book Heroes, Rogues and Lovers, he noted that athletes, actors, blue-collar workers and con men tend to have higher levels of testosterone than clerks, intellectuals and administrators..." and a later reference in this same article stated "one way to increase the amount of testosterone in men is to allow them to handle a gun." We are certainly aware that most police officers never shoot anyone, never fire their gun in anyone's direction, and never beat anyone up. But for those who do it and get caught on camera, it's pretty amazing to all of us that these shootings and beatings continue even when the officers MUST BE AWARE that the cameras are on. They are obviously CAUGHT UP IN SOME MAD FRENZY that is hard for us, especially as women, to understand. We all get mad and while we may picture ourselves beating the heck out of someone, generally speaking, 99% oif us never do it because just imagining it for a minute is enough.
