Just days after Operation Jairo Ground Leader for Costa Rica, Brett Bradley and his team of Sea Shepherd volunteers saved a nesting sea turtle from a poacher who was caught in the act of stealing the vulnerable turtle’s eggs from the sands of Pacuare Beach, Sea Shepherd has been told by a confidential informant that poachers are planning an attack against its crew, in an attempt to intimidate the volunteers peacefully working to save sea turtles and their hatchlings along Costa Rica’s shores. Sea Shepherd believes that the poachers are reacting in response to the organization’s efforts to expose their deadly operations that are claiming the lives of endangered sea turtles. Poachers target nesting turtles – slow-moving and vulnerable as they lay their eggs on the beaches – to be killed for their meat. Their eggs are taken to be sold on the black market in Asia. Poachers will defend these lucrative operations violently, as the world saw in May 2013 with the tragic murder of sea turtle conservationist Jairo Mora Sandoval, widely believed to have been killed by poachers. Sea Shepherd’s campaign is named in honor of Jairo, and was officially launched last month on the two-year anniversary of his death.
