Galveston, Texas- Claudia Kristine Esquivel, 24, is currently seeking a retrial for the June 2014 murder of her longtime boyfriend Christopher Chapa. Unanimously sentenced Read more ... to 27 years behind bars in March of this year, Ms. Esquivel claims that she was 'misrepresented' by her previous attorney, and has since retained new representation, some say a very expensive attorney out of Houston, Texas. This however, has brought many mixed emotions from members of the Chapa family and friends, who have just been adjusting to the sense of relief that justice has finally been served after nearly two years of their own personal hardships brought on by this tragic event. Having served a little over 2 months of her 27 year sentence, Ms. Esquivel has ironically brought this appeal on the date of the victims’ birthday. A birthday they both shared, which of course again sparked outrage in the eyes of family and friends. "This is just reopening and salting the wound all over again..." a member of the Chapa family expressed.”...He is never coming home, we will never see his smile, or spend another holiday or birthday with him." Other close friends and family have also expressed their own feelings and emotions, but most just want this horrific event to be over. If granted a new trial, Ms. Esquivel will most likely be again eligible for bond, which of course will also bring on horrific emotions from family and friends who have had to live with the hardship of the defendant being released throughout the nearly two years of trial until sentencing. Currently, the Chapa family is willing to speak to local and national news outlets to let many people, who are still unaware, know just exactly how all these events transpired, based on the facts and evidence provided in trial, and the $1,000,000 wrongful death civil lawsuit filed against the defendant in April of this year, but still have received little to no interest in someone who will listen to this tragic story of a young man who was tragically taken so soon, and a family whose lives will forever be left in shambles.
