more than three dozens of people inside and outside detention camps,jail cells and police station told a different story.Most of victims spokes anonymously for fear of reprisals.police have arbitrally detained large numbers of people,including pregnant women some of whom later had miscariage or gave birth in at detention centeres.During the investigation,a somali kenyan journalist was arrested for entering a detention camp with video camera,held incommunicado for three days & subjected to humilating search,his equipments -video camera,phone, tape recorder and notebook was impounded and returned after the video was deleted.
''Go to your home and leave us alone''this journalist heard a policeman yelling at a somali kenyan prisoner.He also heard a detective calling a prisoner ''a goat'' -a deterogatory term police officers use to refer to refugees of somalis.Many detainees were living in fear and degrading conditions even after their I.D were verified.some were forced to urinate and defecate inside their cells.In camp after camp,detainees spoke of security guard asking them for bribes or sex for exchange for their release.Relatives of rape victims including pregnant women and 16-17 yrs old girls said they were afraid to speak out.
Victims of the crackdown said that female police officers were unusually cruel claiming that they ridicule somali women who suffered miscariage at detention centers as been 'too afraid to return to their country'' ..Halimo,a somali refugee who was kicked by a female officer in the abdomen ,where she recently had an operation-said she was told to part with her jewellary to to ward off arrest.
The harrowing tale of Bisharo hassan hussein,a pregnant somali refugee in nairobi is an example of the operation's excesses,Bisharo was in her room last week when at around at 2:am policemen stormed her apartment and orderded her to board a waiting truck.When she told them she was unable to do so,they lifted her up and threw her inside.She landed on top of other detainees in the vehicle.Bisharo said she suddenly went into labour and started crying as the police truck began to move.She was released after passersby bribebed a police commander with equivalent of $14.She was later taken to a private hospital where doctors operated on her after 10hours of labour.Her daughter,whose right side intermittently shakes from the head to leg,was in ancubutar for days.Bisharo's bladder has been damaged and she uses a catheter to urinate.She is still in the hospital with a swollen stomach.
Residents of nairobi's eastleigh say that the grenades are hurled by the police and then they come and start demanding bribes,most kenyans are said to be jeolous of booming business of the somali community.
The president met with somali leaders where they requested from the president to authorize and give them permision to secure the eastleigh area the president refused saying the government will do that and after two days there was an attack in a restaurant where 6 people died.Youh and other somali journalists interviewed the owner of the attacked restaurant where he said the attackers were not somalis but the other non somalis who resides in eastleigh.
