Triumph Open Letter: Cesar Cruz said, “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” And I know what you are probably thinking as the obvious retort, who is Cesar Cruz? I don’t know either but I think a brilliant point is raised. No p Read more ... iece of art is for everyone. I don’t like the overall sound of punk and I never got the appeal of country music. But you know what? IT DOESN’T MATTER. If you listen to punk and country, then I’m glad you do and wish I could as well. One of my goals in life is to appreciate all art and expressions of self, but I know I will never reach that goal. That said, I try to improve myself and expand my understanding of others. An artist that goes by Megh makes exclusively pieces that involve cannibalism, including paintings, comics, and other drawings. I could only get through about five scrolls down on his website before I had to stop. I found it absolutely sickening and did not get anything out of what I saw (and grimaced at). Does that mean that Megh’s art has no value or isn’t art? Of course not. Does it make his work objectively vile, offensive, or obscene? That’s a no again. I found his work to be disgusting and I don’t really want to ever look at it again, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING IS WRONG WITH IT. Words like offensive and inappropriate are not objective, nor is there a defined list of topics, words, or looks that are definitely offensive and inappropriate. Art is the ultimate example of subjectivity, a world without boundaries or stigma or judgment. Art therapy has been used to help the mentally ill and “criminally insane” (or whatever easily generalizable term people use now). In a Kansas song, bandleader Kerry Livgren wrote the lyric “I shot a black man down.” Johnny Cash, in ‘Cocaine Blues,’ sings, in his raspy style, “I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down.” Every other song from the ‘60s references LSD and the same goes for ‘70s and ‘80s with cocaine. And we all know and love ‘Excitable Boy’ by Warren Zevon, where the character of the song murders a woman and makes a “cage out of her bones.” Starting to see a trend? Now lets go modern! Andrew Jackson Jihad has a laughable (or more accurately sarcastic) track called “The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving” in which the character dies of a drunk driving accident, but the song is made in a humorous manner with the lead singer using a mock-folk style for the song. The Decemberists (yes, The Decemberists) even have a song about a real life group of killers that murdered approximately 32 people. Since the early ‘90s, Hip-Hop lyrics have revolved around crime, drug use/distribution, and violence. I would be remise if I didn’t mention the sub-genre of Hip-Hop called “horrorcore.” Groups like ICP and D12 popularized this style in which the lyrics revolve around horror movie subjects like serial murder, blood, gore, rape, and any other scary topic you can think of. Yeah, but that is in a specific bubble and is not part of the main population's consciousness right? Wrong again. Eminem’s album ‘Relapse’ sold over 600,000 copies in the first week, has since went double platinum, and won Grammys for best rap album and best rap performance. The lyrics of ‘Relapse’ are nearly 100% about serious drug use, murder, and rape. Despite this, over 2 million people since its release wanted to listen to it enough to buy the album, even though “no one buys albums anymore,” and won the highest awards in its field. Was Led Zeppelin brought up on charges for cocaine use via their lyrics? No. Was Warren Zevon or Eminem arrested for murder via their lyrics? No. Music is art. Painting is art. Hell, I’ve seen a video of a guy rock drumming, which is exactly what you think it is. You could put a stone on display in a museum and people would debate what it means or represents. 'Dexter's popularity alone shows how entertainment is valued over decency and everyone that watches it understands that Michael C. Hall is not a serial killer. He is a actor, which is an art form. People that don't swear still watch Criminal Minds and Law and Order SVU, showing the hypocritical nature of many people. These shows are highly popular, by the way, and show the stories of some of the most grotesque and sickening people that you will ever see. Yet we still watch. Art has no boundaries. Art is fearless. Art does not have a point, unless you want it to. Art is not offensive, unless you feel it is. People have debated whether “art imitates life” or “life imitates art” for years, but I don’t think it matters. I think life should imitate art. In life we are forever confined and trapped in boundaries. Not able to express yourself. Not able to feel the way you want to feel. Not being able to understand yourself and others. As long as someone likes it, even if it’s only the person that made it, it was worth making. While criticisms will always come, as they should in a society with free speech, censorship must not. Art is not wrong or right, nor is it good or bad. Art is not funny or tasteless, nor is it full of love or hate. And lyrics are neither true or false, nor appropriate or inappropriate. Art, like life and pretty much everything in between, is subjective, not objective. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, they are probably selling something. Art is whatever you want it to be. Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. But hey, that’s just one man’s opinion.

#CelebrityGossip! If you have no interest in watching the SUPER BOWL on Sunday, even for the commercials or Katy Perry’s halftime show, there are alternatives. You can always watch Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl, the Hallmark Channel's Kitten Bowl Read more ... or the National Geographic Channel’s Fish Bowl. There are also various binge watching marathons such as The Walking Dead on AMC; A&E has Criminal Minds; it’s Law & Order: SVU on USA; Bravo has The Real Housewives of Atlanta; BBC America launches Star Trek: The Next Generation and if you want some laughs there’s How I Met Your Mother on WGN. Multiple sources are reporting that BRUCE JENNER is going to have his own reality show on the E Channel that will follow him on his journey as he undergoes a sex change. The rumors have been swirling for some time and while there’s no word on when the show will air, they say it’s currently being filmed and that it’ll feature appearances by his family members. The topic will also be addressed on the upcoming season of the Kardashians’ reality show. A source supposedly close to the situation says that Bruce has thought about doing this as far back as 1990, but Kris Jenner talked him out of it. Another source says that when Bruce talked openly with the family, at one point Kris "lost it." Meanwhile, the latest photos of Bruce show him with fuller lips than before. FLORENCE HENDERSON will forever be remembered as the mom on The Brady Bunch, but now at the age of 80 she reveals that she has a friend with benefits! Henderson tells Closer Weekly, "I still feel like I'm 28. There's no age limit on the enjoyment of sex. It keeps getting better." She says her buddy is a chiropractor who lives in Fort Lauderdale and they're not exclusive. Henderson says, "I really enjoy his company, but I am sure he sees other people, as I do." She adds that she likes to date younger men because they need to keep up with her! The GRAMMY AWARDS have added some duets to their list of performers. Those teaming up will be Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett; Jessie J and Tom Jones; Hozier and Annie Lennox; and Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine. The Grammys are coming up on February 8th. Broadway star JOEL GREY has come out of the closet. The 82-year-old Grey told People magazine, "I don't like labels, but if you have to put a label on it, I'm a gay man." It was no secret to his friends, family and fellow performers even though he was married for 24 years and became the father of two, including actress Jennifer Grey. He said it took so long to publicly acknowledge it because he comes from a generation when it wasn't OK to be gay. #mandyintheam #947KUMU
