Little war news came through the office today. -------- Read more ... ---------------------------------------------------------- Other war news from today in 1916: Western Front Bad weather hinders both British and French operations. Eastern Front Desperate fighting on Narajowka river, Halicz region. Germans claim success here and on Stokhod (Pripet); many prisoners. Heavy fighting in defile of Merisor (Transylvania) west of Petrozseny. Battle lasts two days. Romanians successful. Romanians in Dobruja, holding the Rasova-Tuzla position, defending the railway Bucharest-Constanza, heavily engaged. In Galicia, heavy fighting for three days past. Southern Front The Serbo-Russian-French Army advances, making great turning movement in their march on Monastir. Naval and Overseas Operations Belgians (under General Tombeaur) occupy Tabora. Allied blockade of the Greek Macedonian Coast, from River Struma to River Mesto. Political, etc. M. Briand speaks against the dissident socialist faction of the Chambe. North of the Somme, we took some enemy trenches 200 meters south of Attic. We captured 50 prisoners, including two officers. South of the Somme, the fight continued relentlessly in Deniécourt. Our infantry took the village and pushed to the vicinity of Ablaincourt. Simultaneous operations enabled us to remove a trench west of Horgny, chase the enemy from three small woods and occupy several trenches southwest of Deniécourt. The number of prisoners taken on 17 and 18 exceeds 1600, including 25 officers. Activity of both artilleries in Champagne, west of the road Souain in Somme-Py. We took a trench on the southern slopes of the Mort Homme (left bank of the Meuse). Total prisoners captured by the British on the Somme reached nearly 5000. Serb troops repulsed the Bulgarian onslaught east of Cerna. The Bulgarians suffered heavy losses here. Further west, the Serbs removed the first line on the Bulgarian Kaimackalan. Northwest of Lake Ostrovo, they continued to attack Brod. The Franco-Russian troops have taken Florina in an assault, despite the desperate resistance of the enemy. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Mort-Homme is a commune in the Meuse department in Lorraine in north-eastern France. Sent letters to Mr. Kendrick and Miss Hedge. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other War news from today in 1916: Western Front British advance north-west of Pozieres. Eastern Front Russians take Stanislau and 8,500 prisoners. Russians cross the Sereth and repulse repeated enemy counter-attacks. Russians cross the Zlota-Lipa and advance on Halicz. Southern Front Allied offensive begins in Macedonia. French bombard Doiran (Serbo-Greek frontier), and occupy Hill 227, south of Doiran. Political, etc. Mr. McKenna, in the House of Commons, spoke on the British financial position. British protest re: shooting of Captain Fryatt published. We have made some gains north of the Somme where we seized a small wood and a trench off the enemy north of Hem wood. We have now conquered in this region, a line of trenches on a front of 5 km since the 7th August. The enemy were dispersed by our fire in Champagne. Violent fighting on the right bank of the Meuse in the sector of Fleury Thiaumont. The enemy had set foot in a few trenches and in the work of Thiaumont. Our attacks against enabled us to take the trenches and go in the book. Similarly, we removed the German trenches in the sector Chapter-le-Chenois, taking 200 prisoners. A Taube bombed Nancy: 5 injured . The Russians advancing on Sereth and brought to 8500 the number of prisoners taken. I n the south of the Dniester, they progress on a wide front, taking the city of Thonacz, they captured Germans in 2000 and several heavy guns.
