In collaboration with principal Rophus at Pwani School for mentally challenged, we are now working on the project also aims at improving parental understanding and relationship with their children with developmental disabilities. The challenges in this area are enormous. Which does not mean that it is impossible to make a difference! Many live with an understanding of the reason why the child has a developmental disability is maternal. Many fathers therefore choose to run off while mom gets left with all the children. There is also much shame associated with having a child with developmental disabilities. There are many stories about physical and sexual abuse committed by both family and others. Even murder. These stories rarely involves efforts to make responsible perpetrators and that most people tacitly accept that it happens. This will be done in collaboration with us from Norway, teachers and the principal of the school and youngsters. On March 17th we had a meeting with Approximately 60 parents of Pupil with developmental Disabilities (mentally challenged) that Pwani School for mentally challenged. We talked about the history of people with developmental disabilities in Norway, the creation of NFU (Norwegian Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities) and what we are working on and why. We talked about the causes of developmental disabilities, a challenging issue since many people here are thinking That the causes might be witchcraft or punishment of the mother. We have met many great parents who really want to work for the best for their children. The meeting also attended representatives of Kenyan authorities department for disabled, parent representative who were talking about their own history. The meeting turned out to be beyond all expectations. When we started this project we had a goal to create an organization for parents of mentally challenged in first place here at Pwani School. Therefore it was so wonderful that the meeting today was concluded with the selection of an interim board who will work further with the creation of a parent organization! They had the first meeting now in april. This means in principle that an organization actually has been created. The name of the new organization is MWANGAZAPAS, meaning to show the way... We are looking forward to the next chapter! Thank you all for supporting our project! Please share our page.
