Read more ... pparently has an open ulcer suggested by the reddening of skin, nipple retraction and a reduction of her breast volume as well as axillar lymph nodes. All of these physical symptoms may suggest a locally advanced breast cancer.
As for the rheumatism, there appears to be evidence that the model on the left (most likely his wife Hélène) may have been suffering severe rheumatoid arthritis. Rubens, a master in human anatomy would not have painted the awkward hand and fingers unless he intended to. Or in other words, Rubens probably painted the hand and fingers exactly as he saw them: deformed and with the characteristic ‘swan’s neck’ or ‘buttonhole’ deformities of the fingers that are representative of this disease.
