Heather Chapman Visits in solitary confinement.
Visit #12
I walk into the prison.
Can I help you?
I'm here for a visit.
I'm handed a piece of paper.
It has Nikko's picture on it and it reads;
"Special visit" and the time I arrived.
Special visits Are;
*Non-contac
Read more ... t visits.
The visits are separated by a glass partition.
* Limited to 2 hours.
* The visits are held on death row.
Once on death row I'm locked in a hallway. There is 6 or 7 visit partitions.
I sit and wait for Nikko.
I'm looking into a room about the size of a phone booth.
There is a small narrow window on the locked door in which to enter the room.
Beyond that Is the death row law library.
I see a shackled inmate Pass the narrow window.
And it's split second I said to myself, is that Nikko? knowing that man was too old. next I see the Inmate raised his hands in order for the guard to unlock the top portion of the shackles. I put my glasses on to look at the Inmate hands. That's for sure not Nikko. His hands are much to old to be Nikkos.
The door opens, and there's that smile! Oh it's Nikko!
A million thoughts paths through my mind . First, Thank God he's alive!
I'm reading his body language. Quickly scan to see his overall health.
His weigh? His color? Typical mom stuff. ( in this situation.)
At first sight he looks good.
Back to that smile. Nikko by nature is a jokester. He's loves practical jokes. He likes getting a rise out of people in particular me. Haha..
He's got that smile, it looks like the cat that ate the canary.
Either way it's just so nice to see Nikko smiling!
I got so excited, I nearly jumped out of my seat. Nikko!
Nikko! Nikko!
All I wanted to do is give my son a big hug!
Nikko starts search through his food box.
All the while with that smile, he can't look at me because...
It is prison. Too much emotion is not good.
We are Italian so we speak with our hands. As we're speaking I noticed 2 of Nikkos fingers have been broken and healed improperly.
Nikko! What happened to your fingers?
Ma stop.
Nikko let me see your hands?
Stop. Just stop.
Nikko puts his hands under the table.
Nikko show me your hands!
Nikko puts his hands on the table. I stand up to get a better look.
I realize those were the hands I saw through that narrow window.
They were hands of a grown man...
Two and a half years I wasn't allowed to see my own son.
He was found in solitary confinement catatonic in 2014.
Just a few months ago he was 40 pounds underweight literally dying in the solitary confinement cell... And everything in between.
Things like broken fingers healing improperly I expect. But looking at those grown mans hands, took me off guard.
The tears Just started rolling down my face.
I've never cried visiting Nikko. Not even the first visit. He looked like death, like a Holocaust victim. Skin and bones eyes black and sunken in. He had no recollection of who I was.
I was prepared. I automatically kicked into getting" him better mode.
Nikko looked at me . I immediately stopped crying. Nikko do I look okay? Trying to clean up my mascara from my face.
Well you don't look like Marilyn Monroe anymore. Haha..
We laughed and moved on....
