Question of the Month: "Is this real or #Hacktober?"
Today is Halloween, but if you visited any Facebook office worldwide this month, you'd be forgiven for thinking it came a bit early. That's because throughout October we've been channeling the holiday in our third annual celebration of Hacktober—o Read more ...
ur effort to raise security awareness around the company and have fun doing it.
Like lots of things at Facebook, Hacktober started two years ago as an experiment. At our headquarters in California, we pulled off a few "tricks" (watch out for suspicious emails and mysterious USBs left lying around!) and the Security team got a chance to talk with employees about strong security practices. The fun continued last year, when company participation in our internal Facebook discussion group about security grew 400%. When employees from all over the company started approaching us with excited questions about what was in store for Hacktober this year, we knew we were on to something.
This is the 10th anniversary of National Cyber Security Awareness Month in the U.S., and we set out to make Hacktober better than ever. We designated "security ambassadors" in our 10 largest offices worlwide and solicited feedback in advance about what kind of activities would work best. Going through this process gave us perhaps the most powerful insight we've ever gained from Hacktober: by making security discussion more social, we can make it a lot more engaging and effective. Here are some of the highlights from this year's activities:
Participation across the company: Every week, external speakers or representatives from internal groups like Production Engineering, Infrastructure, and Security have given talks to packed audiences in person and at viewing parties. Sometimes groups outside Security even plan "tricks" for us!More discussion: About half of the company now participates in our internal security discussion group (500 more just this year). Lots of posts ask whether suspicious things they see are part of a #Hacktober trick or if they're actually real, and we learn about actual threats this way.Fun activities: We held a weekly Fright Night series with pumpkin carving and a scary movie. Tons of people turned up to ask security questions, too. We gave demonstrations to caution people about topics like malware infections from public charging stations. And as always, demand for our coveted Hacktober t-shirts was huge!Fright Night in Hacker Square
Capture the Flag (CTF): We've run a number of CTF competitions at external conferences in the past six months and this month we ran a modified version for our employees to show them what this game, involving teams of hackers who attempt to attack and defend computers and networks, is all about.Collaboration between teams: Our Hacktober activities are helping teams in the company connect in new ways. For example, our team that fights abuse on the site is now tied in with the backend processes for the group running our bug bounty Whitehat program.
The importance of security extends well beyond October, so even though we now bid farewell to Hacktober until next year, we're working to extend the awareness through the rest of the calendar year and remind people that maintaining a strong security culture involves everyone.
