Ben Pavone Dear Mr. Stewart:
You should not leave your show.
I get boredom and routine. It is completely understandable that after 16 years of doing the same show, one would crave change and feel demoralized by firmly entrenched lifestyle patterns that seemin

But that's still crazy for a person in your position.
When you're on top, sitting on a perch at the pinnacle of the television food chain, you stay on as long as the world will have you. Most shows don't last 2 seasons. You've hit on a magic formula that is enduringly popular. You've singularly become one of, or the most, trusted news sources in the country, with a gloriously entertaining comic touch. It's nothing less than lightning in a bottle, and replicating this in another form or format, or finding some new magic formula, is exceedingly rare.
Take an extended vacation. Give up the chair temporarily to your comic bretheren. Go on sabbatical. Make an Indie movie; become a drug addict; save a third world country. Live out whatever earthly pleasure you crave for 3, 6 months. But don't walk away cold, or forever, because in a few months or a year's time, you'll want to retake your panoramic, perfectly contoured seat in the center of the nation's political discourse, and yet, it'll be gone, lost like lightning in a bottle you dared to let escape.
My two cents.
Respectfully,
-Ben Pavone, Esq.
