Connections Project - Culliford House Please support my project. I am helping a group of elderly people to tell their story, and by this first small exhibition I hope to continue the momentum of the ideas within this project. * That old people are worthy * That they deserve your time * T Read more ... heir stories are valid * We must try and understand their challenges I am self funded, I am passionate. Over the course of the last 2 years I have grown to learn the above 'ideas' from my art group and I have dedicated all of my time and energy to this project. EXCITING ART PROJECT IN DORCHESTER WITH ARTISTS AGED 76-101. Breaking barriers to communication & hearing the human story It is well recorded how being creative can improve a sense of well-being and positivity. It also helps dexterity, self-confidence, stops a feeling of isolation and keeps your mind healthy & active. I provide art sessions to a number of groups & help members to be creative (for example) printing, painting and sculpture. One of my regular groups is a small group of elderly people who live in a care home in Dorset. I have been helping them to be creative for over two years. Over this time I have grown to really know and care about these people. We often talk, laugh and joke with each other. The work they make is touching; it reflects their challenges and their personalities. Some members of the group have dementia; some have poor mobility or poor eyesight. What is inspirational is their ‘jois de vie’, their have-a-go attitude and their sense of fun. That is what I have fallen in love with. As a group they have completed three Art Exhibitions; each one in the care home where they live and fully supported by a catalogue. They regularly sell work, because it’s intelligent and considered. Their next Art Exhibition is a big step: It is outside of their home and their comfort zone; they are sharing their stories, their ideas and their personalities – I know that you will be touched, inspired and uplifted The Current Project: The theme they are working on for their fourth exhibition is about ‘connections’. The artists are connecting with their Past, Present and Future There are many parts to these elements, but the basic idea is them sharing their ‘Past’ through photographs, paintings, screenprinting, creative writing, sculpture and film. They are connecting with their ‘Present’ by meeting new ‘friends’ through social media, visiting them and by them visiting the group. Everything is being documented as part of the artistic process. The Artists at the care home are connecting with their ‘future’ by talking about their hopes and dreams for the future of their families, themselves and the wider community. How can you help? We have asked people to take a moment and send a message (introducing themselves) in a photograph. This can be emailed to me (bongley@gmail.com) or sent to use via social media using the hashtag #connectionsproject. This small connection shows you have taken a moment to say hello & support an older person. The messages in the Art Exhibition and project are that, older people have a value, their story is one of humanity, of history, love and the challenges that we all face. They have challenges that they face with their health and daily life; this art project aims to bring them to light, so that people can be mindful of them. By raising awareness of these challenges we aim to highlight the need to understand and help to fight them through fundraising and research. Another way you can join in is by sending them a letter or by visiting the group. You can join one of their weekly Art Sessions, or come and have a cuppa and a piece of cake. These interactions lift the group’s spirits. They love to meet new people as it gives them a sense of community and confidence that is sometimes lacking in the elderly. Sometimes; when mobility is an issue, people feel isolated. This whole project aims to bring people together, so those feelings of connectivity can be strengthened. Please join us for our Art Exhibition on Grandparents Day in September. Yoga its Origin : Our Great Yogi The science of Yoga has its origin thousands of years ago, long before the first religion or belief systems were born. According to Yogic lore, Shiva has seen as the first yogi or ādiyogi and the first guru or ādiguru. Several thousand years ago, on the banks of lake Kantisarovar in the Himalayas, ādiyogi poured his profound knowledge into the legendary saptarishis or "seven sages". These sages carried this powerful Yogic science to different parts of the world including Asia, the Middle East, northern Africa and South America. Interestingly, modern scholars have noted and marvelled at the close parallels found between ancient cultures across the globe. However, it was in India that the Yogic system found its fullest expression. Agastya, the saptarishi who travelled across the Indian subcontinent, crafted this culture around a core Yogic way of life. Yoga is widely considered as an "immortal cultural outcome" of the Indus Saraswati Valley Civilisation – dating back to 2700 BC – and has proven itself to cater to both material and spiritual uplift of humanity. A number of seals and fossil remains of Indus Saraswati Valley Civilisation with Yogic motifs and figures performing Yoga sādhana suggest the presence of Yoga in ancient India. The seals and idols of mother Goddess are suggestive of Tantra Yoga. The presence of Yoga is also available in folk traditions, Vedic and Upanishadic heritage, Buddhist and Jain traditions, Darshanas, epics of Mahabharata including Bhagawadgita and Ramayana, theistic traditions of Shaivas, Vaishnavas and Tantric traditions. Though Yoga was being practiced in the pre-Vedic period, the great sage Maharishi Patanjali systematised and codified the then existing Yogic practices, its meaning and its related knowledge through Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. After Patanjali, many sages and Yoga masters contributed greatly for the preservation and development of the field through welldocumented practices and literature. Yoga has spread all over the world by the teachings of eminent Yoga masters from ancient times to the present date. Today, everybody has conviction about Yoga practices towards the prevention of disease, maintenance and promotion of health. Millions and millions of people across the globe have benefitted by the practice of Yoga and the practice of Yoga is blossoming and growing more vibrant with each passing day. Now-a-days everybody has conviction about yoga practices towards the preservation, maintenance and promotion of health. Yoga has spread all over the world by the teachings of great Yoga Masters like Swami Shivananda, Shri T. Krishnamacharya, Swami Kuvalayananda, Shri Yogendara, Swami Rama, Sri Aurobindo, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi, Acharya Rajanish, Swami Dhirendra Bhrahmachari, Swami Geetananda Giri, Pattabhi jois, B.K.S. Iyengar, Swami Satyananda Saraswati and the like through their lineages. The Previous Efforts Of The idea to celebrate World Yoga Day has Been Proposed by many. Amongst them is a call by Significant international Humanitarian and meditation and Yoga Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in December two thousand and eleven. Following the Adoption of the UN Resolution, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar lauded the Efforts of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, stating that "It is very difficult for any philosophy, religion or culture to survive without state patronage. Now, official recognition by the UN would further spread the benefit of Yoga to the entire world. MESSAGE Hon'ble Prime Minister of India "Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us to deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day." Speech of Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi at the 69 session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014 (Source : Commo NEED The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narandra Modi has desired to spread India’s traditional knowledge worldwide with credible systems which shall provide India the leadership in assuring quality of Yoga practices across the world.
