John Sammon Sammon If there is a villain in the historical novel of World War I “Guns at the Abyss” it is Arthur Zimmermann, German Undersecretary of State in 1914. In actuality he was Secretary of State because his boss Gottlieb von Jagow, a shy retiring man, was Read more ... often detached and dis-involved from the momentous events. Thick-headed, determined, obnoxious, arrogant, Zimmermann was consistently a driving force behind the scenes in steering Germany toward the disastrous decision to support its ally Austria Hungary to attack Serbia with no conditions, the famous “Blank Check.” Later Zimmermann would become infamous when in a deadly display of stupidity he authorized the sending of a telegram to Mexico guaranteeing the Mexicans that if they launched an attack on the neutral United States (to diverts its attention from the war), Germany would help Mexico recover territories lost to Mexico in the Mexican War (California, Arizona, New Mexico). The British intercepted the “Zimmermann Telegram” and relayed it to an infuriated and formerly pacifist President Woodrow Wilson. The U.S. entered World War I a few months later and tipped the war in favor of the allies ensuring Germany’s defeat. “Guns at the Abyss” is an accurate recreation of the secret meetings that led to the Great War. Here is what the publisher said of the historical suspense romance novel. Guns at the Abyss is a novelistic political stage show replete with a realistic cast of government bureaucrats, dignitaries, military leaders and soldiers, patriots and radicals, actual city and street names, parks and buildings, true-to-life details of period dress, decoration, pomp, charm, period viewpoint, sexuality, and voyeurism. The dialogue and other human interaction are calculated to fit the portrayal of an era when manners and social behavior dictated allegiance to custom, position, and patriotism.
