His condition deteriorated and he crashed, an emergency blood tranfusion saved his life. But he cannot continue to fight without your help. WHAT IS BABESIOSIS? Tick bite fever in dogs is a parasite transmitted by ticks. Not all ticks carry the parasite, so if your dog is bitten it doesn’t mean that it will get Babesiosis. Once the parasite has entered the bloodstream of the dog, they enter the red blood cells and divide inside the cells. The parasites cause a reaction inside the red blood cells, making them ‘sticky.’ Thus many infected red blood cells get stuck in smaller blood vessels, such as those in the spleen. Symptoms can include: Anaemia Fever Weight loss Rapid breathing, heavy pulse Enlarged spleen Jaundice Seizures Vomiting, diarrhoea Muscle pain In addition to the blood transfusion, funds are needed for ongoing medication and testing.
