On May 19, 2014, a landscaper named Jay Testa showed up unannounced at my house. The pet sitter had let the dogs out in the enclosed backyard and went to the barn in the back of the property to tend to my two horses.
Jay Testa entered the yard on his riding lawn mower, sliced off Daisy's paw and fled. The pet sitter found Daisy shortly afterwards, and rushed her to the vet, but Daisy's front left leg had to be amputated from the shoulder down.
Jay Testa initially lied to me about doing it, but then confessed to the police 4 days later.
The Orange County DA took the case - People v. Jay Testa.
Jay Testa pled guilty to the animal cruelty charge - NY AG Law 353, which says that anyone who maims an animal and leaves it shall go to jail for up to 1 year.
The DA has offered a split plea bargain of 2 months in jail and 3 years probation. The judge - Justice Kimberly van Haaster - in Goshen Town Court - indicated in December that she is leaning toward no jail time since this is Jay Testa's first crime. I find this potential outcome to be just as disturbing as the crime.
The sentencing is tomorrow, MARCH 17TH, AT 12:30PM, AT 41 WEBSTER AVENUE IN GOSHEN, NY.
I, along with Daisy's supporters, will be protesting outside of the court house, starting at 11am. We can't let horrific crimes like this go unpunished.
