ame out firing on all cylinders. Within the first 10 minutes, crafty play by the Vegas flyhalf had LA missing tackles and making mistakes, allowing two quick unconverted tries. LA was able to settle down and at the 20 minute mark, a pivotal injury to the Vegas flyhalf allowed LA to crawl back into the game with three tries (Adrian Ojeda, Mike McNeely, Josh Calistro) (one converted) by the 35 minute mark. Again, though, LA took their foot off the pedal and just before halftime, Vegas created a turnover deep inside their own territory and were able to break 85 meters for a converted try to make it 17-17 at halftime.
After a heated speech by LA head coach Barry Williams, the second half proved much more invigorated than the first. A combination of key injuries to Vegas players and the depth off the bench, LA started to show their true form by defending their goal line on more than one occasion while finding the try zone two additional times (Tala Gafa, Josh Calistro) (one converted) before full time. At the final whistle, LA walked away 29-17 and stays undefeated.
While happy with the win, LA recognizes the work needed to stay at the top. The shaky performance underscores the need to work as a team, minimize mistakes and better prepare coming into the game. There are no easy teams at this level.
In the Blues vs Vegas DIII, the Blues were able to score early and were able to pull away late, giving them 5 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw on the season.
