Glenny Morrison BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- At least one person was killed in a construction accident at a Highway 410 overpass when a chunk of concrete collapsed onto a roadway below and smashed onto a passing vehicle. Bonney Lake police officers raced to the scene at An Read more ... geline Road when they got the call for help at 10:15 a.m. "We found that the jersey barrier that covers SR-410 that was being worked on by construction workers came loose from the overpass and fell onto Angeline Road and struck one vehicle that was traveling north on the road," said Todd Green with Bonney Lake Police. "When it fell off the overpass, it landed square on the roof of the vehicle." Green says they have been unable to determine the age and sex of the driver, nor if there were any passengers in the pickup. "The overpass is very unstable right now and we're waiting for L&I and DOT to arrive on scene," Green said. "Once they arrive on scene, we'll be able to be able to secure the overpass a little more and make it safe for emergency workers to get in there and determine how many occupants are in the vehicle." Katie Vance, who lives nearby, said she could hear and feel the crash inside her home. "I thought a semi had come down the guard rail here in front," she said. "It was a metal sound and a very heavy sound... it was through your feet – like a guttural. It shook the whole house." Dawn Nelson was on Angeline Road heading toward the overpass when the accident happened. "I was just a second or two behind him," she said. "I could hear the three crunch sounds and then it just came down." Green said the construction project involved crews contracted through the City of Bonney Lake to widen the sidewalk on the north side of SR-410. Investigators say they will look into whether Angeline Road should have been closed during the construction. "That really is in the responsibility of the contractor to decide whether it is to be closed down," Green said. "Right now it looks like a very sad accident." The overpass itself remained open to traffic although investigators warned that SR-410 will likely face lane restrictions Monday afternoon and evening for the investigation once the scene is stabilized. "The bridge platform itself that the cars go over... there's nothing showing that it's been damaged in any way," Green said. "This looks like it was just the side jersey barrier that... came loose and fell onto the roadway."
